My name is Victor Igonoh. I am a Human resources Management professional with over 10 years’ experience in people management.

While in between jobs in 2013, I stumbled upon the many opportunities available in the waste recovery space and started to engage in Scrap Trading. During that period, I sold Scrap metals and plastics to be able to pay my bills over a 6 months period, and there started my journey/discovery into what happens in circular economies.

Over the years, even after getting back into full-time employment, I continued to engage in waste recovery with emphasis on the recovery and recycling of Plastic beverage bottles otherwise known as PET bottles.

In engaging in Recycling of PET bottles as a business, I directly impact the environment by cleaning it of non-biodegradable materials that would hitherto have had harmful impacts on the environment.

In November 2017, I sold my only car to start up a small factory where we now process the bottles we recover from the streets of Lagos. In this facility, we crush the bottles and supply the crushed flakes to manufacturers who use them to make new products.

Having seen the potential in this business as well as its positive impact on the environment, I recently informed my employer of my intention to resign my employment to pursue my dream. Getting accepted into this Masterclass will therefore be timely for me as it will prepare me with business and leadership skills I require to take this initiative to the next level.

MOTIVATION TO ATTEND START-UP NATION MASTERCLASS 2018

              Dear Team,

My name is Fidelis Bonaventure Uzoma, a  graduate of Philosophy from the University of Ibadan. Today, I am a youth development practitioner working to improve the lives of at-risk teenagers and Youths Living With Disabilities in Nigeria through economic empowerment initiatives. In 2017 I founded the Youth Aid Development Foundation- a platform through which I provide counselling, psycho-social support and capacity development to at-risk teens and youths with disabilities. Today, YADF strives to reach  disadvantaged youths in low-income communities to train them on employability skills, so they can gain access to decent jobs and lead change in their own communities.

I demonstrate my passion for the economic empowerment of youths with disabilities because growing up, I had to deal with the challenges of living in a marginalized community. I overcame and rose from an E student to an A student, finishing as one of the best in my set in the university with many leadership awards. I do this work because like me, a lot of youths are trapped, and with just some support will thrive like I did.

I believe the Start-Up Nation will be a platform to hone my leadership competence and result-oriented lifeskills to initiate/accelerate a sustainable a viable business solution to the problem of youth unemployment in Nigeria. Gaining the experience, knowledge, skills and mentorship on the Sahara Hub platform will equip me to improve on the quality of my work in Nigeria, and empower millions of underserved youths with disabilities in Nigeria towards becoming economically sustainable and authentic change-makers.

I am keen about making lasting impact and instilling innovative culture in young Africans through creativity, enterprise and knowledge.

So, I started TechGen Africa, a platform to grooming global tech innovators targeted towards driving growth in Africa.

To achieve the mission, I we:

Expand computer science to schools (primary and secondary)

                An innovation bootcamp

                Mentoring

                TechGen Challenge

                CodeCamp and

                TechGen conferences

I have come to realize that passion and  Good intentions are not sufficient to run a startup but knowledge.

I will really love to be selected for this masterclass in order to help us grow and make a better impact.

                Best regards

                ‘Sodiq, TechGen

I am Samuel Adewumi Owolabi, a graduate of Biochemistry from the university of Ilorin, Nigeria.

I am an active citizen who has worked and is still in contact with Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), Nigeria. I am a youth development practitioner, interested in raising the youth of this generation towards personal development which will culminate into Nation development.

I discovered a lot of young people are not aware of what they will be facing in the next few years, a lot are not aware of most of the tools they have at hand and their main asset, the mind. This has moved me to waking them up and energizing them so as to meet up with this challenges unseen.

This vision includes boosting and supplying the right information needed to set up their own businesses, investing in their future financially and in knowledge, and preparing them for the civil world.

I have organized seminars for young people, trained young workers on what they need to do in their closets as well as their various workplaces in order to contribute substantially to their organizations and Nigeria at large.

I am also interested in raising young people with a nation development mentality, i.e. a level at which all youth start to think about their country and not only of themselves.

I believe Start-up Nation will give me more trainings required to carry out these projects, teaching life etiquettes, leadership which will help me out and also I would be able to impact the same into thousands of young people I am set to meet.

With the nation’s development project at hand, I believe I should be selected for the Start-up Nation Master class and more of the Sahara Hub projects will be spread abroad.

                I am a change agent.

My name is Mr. Christian Barika Igbeghe, a graduate of Agricultural Economics and Extension from the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.

I am hardworking and diligent, task-oriented and committed with high ability to multitask and willingness to learn, driven by resilient passion and determination to achieve life’s goals and positively impact my society, I am an excellent team player equipped with requisite skills.

I was born and raised in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, in a predominantly agrarian community; hence my interest in agriculture was inborn as our main source of livelihood. My curiosity and passion to better the lives of my people motivated me to seek for a career in agriculture with the goal of acquiring scientific knowledge with which our local practices can be harnessed and transformed into a technology-driven business.

Furthermore, with the knowledge acquired so far, and in line with my passion, I have launched an agricultural initiative called AGROCOAST. Through this platform, I have introduced over 100 farmers into intensive system of mushrooms production: a practice with which farm and household wastes are being transformed into money-making ventures. Additionally, my pet project takes me to different parts of Niger Delta and Nigeria, where we train and motivate rural farmers to embrace modern technologies in their farming practices. To this end, our training programme has contributed to food production, thus alleviating hunger, provided employment opportunities to many young people who have discovered a new way of fending for themselves, transformed agriculture from a mere inherited cultural practice to a vehicle for sustainable development.

Therefore, with SaharaHub master class I hope to broaden my horizon, network and learn from other great minds and increase my competence through which I’d be able to reach out to more people and further root the Agrocoast project for greater societal impact.

Being born in an agrarian environment ,I have always dreamt of setting one of the biggest farm in the Niger Delta region as nature may permit, with this reason I have come up with my business name called “Open Greener Enterprise” where people will be taught the rudiment of agriculture and how they should go about becoming employers of labour which will boast the nation’s economy and reduce unemployment rate.

Having studied and also acquired vast exposure in agriculture, I therefore thought it wise to explore this rare opportunity and privilege to contibute my little qota to the development of our nation’s economy.

A waste audit conducted in our home and the data that confronted us inspired the Gedeihen Recyclers Initiative. Every weekend we prepare waste generated over the week to be dumped in the municipal trash cans, on 18th April 2016 while we were battling to compress the trash into five trash bags, there arose a question, why do we have so much plastic waste? and if our household generates this much in a week, how much would over 18 million households in Lagos generate? That lead us into conducting a waste audit which revealed 80% of our waste in a week are recyclables especially plastics, about 20% are organics. These data birthed the Gedeihen Recyclers Initiative which seeks to intercept recyclables from going to landfills and seek to provide employment opportunities for women and youth through active participation in waste management, this way we were able to give Taste to Waste.

Earlier this year in August myself and my team volunteered to receive training as business development service providers from the UKAID under the project MAFIATA to help MSEs grow their business in rural communities of katsina state. Today we have a created a start-up called Reeba Business Development Services, addressing specific needs and wants of SMEs struggling to survive, with focus on high priority issues such as financial inclusion and access to fund gap.

Our model is tailored to assist and create value to SMEs as regards access to market, training on modern products and other customer related services to improve the quality of their products and services. Transfer business knowledge, skills and information on various business activities both financial and non financial assistance. We work with Garment makers, furniture, auto mobile repairs, GSM repairs in katsina.

This address the UN Sustainable Development Goals 8,9 and 17. We have developed a long term saving scheme for our clients and as well sort to help them secure some insurance in health and education for their children.

This masterclass will bring invaluable knowledge to the team, a platform for potential partnership and strengthen our network base with other enterprises and entrepreneurs whom we will continue to receive mentorship and share ideas.

Currently, I am a Freelancer working and gathering skills and knowledge in building a proper structured growing business that can outlive the founder and serve the community at large.

For more than seven years, I have worked closely with entrepreneurs in design and publishing firms and have developed strong expertise in running a proper structured growing business that can add tangible value to my community at large.

Working closely with the company owners and her staff has exposed me to a lot of loopholes and pitfalls in running an unstructured business.

This has increased and made me an ardent active learner in preferring lasting solutions to SMEs in the nearest future.

I greatly desire to immensely improve the life of the youth in entrepreneurship ethnically and financially.

As a highly analytical and inquisitive person, I am eager to learn and be mentored by those who have gone ahead of me. And I feel I am responsible for making a big change in the SMEs conglomerate.

Therefore, with my exposure and the desire to do more than earning a salary, Sahara Hub accepting me into the START UP NATION 2018 MASTER CLASS Programme will give me the invaluable opportunity to acquire more knowledge and technical know-how of running a viable life-changing business that can have lasting impact to the society at large.
