As a 200 level Economics undergraduates, what steps do I need to take to become a finance professional?

            In school we were mostly thought the theoretical aspects of finance. This also applies when you enroll for a professional course in finance . Most time launching into the career world with all certifications one might not be able to get career in finance and it can be frustrating. How can one overcome this? Should one reject offers till the right career path comes or just kick start a job till one can divert?

              As we prepare to start the session slated for 12 noon today (Friday, 20 October 2017), kindly find the following worth of note:

              * For a Business or Corporate – Finance represents the “Bottom Line” of the business activities.

              * For Individuals – Finance represents the “Bottom Line” of the individual person.

              Hence, My QUOTE:

              “Finance is seen as a HUB for all activities (Economic, Social, Political, Security, Political and Religious) in today’s World”

                              @davda,

                              The first step is to ask yourself the honest question “What is my Interest?”; ” Why Career in Finance?”; and “What resources do I have?”.

                              Honest answers to these questions will assist in formulating the real steps to developing your career in finance.

                                            @beatrice,

                                            I will advise if your real interest is a career in finance, kindly take up a job in a finance function. What this means, is that you can seek employment in smaller entities that can avail you opportunities in elementary accounting, so as to avail you opportunities to start from the beginning. Even though the pay might be lower. Alternatively, where you presently work, you can appropriate HR if you can be avail an opportunity to switch function to finance as a way of defining a career path and enhancing your career development.

                                                I am graduate of Chemical Engineering but I have strong interest in Finance. I presently work in the Finance department of the organization where I presently work and also taking ICAN exams. Sometimes I wonder if my background in Engineering could affect my career in Finance, and I hope employers won’t

                                                view me as lacking in focus.

                                                      I have been trying for the past 3 years to start a career in Finance but all to no avail. I have a B. Sc in Economics and I’m at the final phase of my MBA (finance) degree. I have been invited for interviews by top firms in the finance sector but it seems there is something I am not getting right. How should I put myself out there and get my feet into the Finance world because as an individual, all I see myself doing is Finance.

                                                          @sanya,

                                                          You need to acknowledge that Academic Education is to expose you to the theoretical framework on different fields. Why enrolment for a professional programme is expected to bridge the gap between theory and practice, of which in the present state in Nigeria, this objective is not achieved. WHY? Just because the theories expected to have been thought are not being delivered due to many factors known to all. You can learn practice much more via youtube of the area of concern and also harness online free practice courses such as <span style=”color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri;”>https://www.edx.org/</span> and <span style=”color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri;”>https://www.coursera.org/</span>

                                                          WAY OUT – Embrace self development through varius forms of learning (online, coaching, practice, etc.) need not to turn down work that do not necessarily fit into your career path at your early stage (because all encountered is equally a learning process), but ensure you harness every opportunity within the company to switch appropriately to your career path.

                                                              It is not necessarily about the professional certification or qualification, but it is about self development and skills achieved through any means. But, taking professional examinations do make it easier to acquire the skills under the right intent and purposes, and not just for holding certificates.

                                                              Hence, in finance and depending on your area of interest (among the branches of fianance), you can find these interesting: ICAN, CIMA, ACCA, CFA, CIIA, CIBN, CIS, GARP (FRM & ERP), CITN, etc

                                                                  Strictly speaking, finance and accounting are not the same. They are two different but interrelated disciplines.

                                                                  In the real world, most times though not all the times, you just have to choose one. It is either you are an accountant or a finance expert.

                                                                  Again, in the two worlds, to do well and excel, you will surely have to specialise. For instance, you may be an accountant but specialise in Financial Reporting, Financial Accounting, Audit & Assurance, Taxation, etc. Similarly, you may be a finance expert but specialise in money market, capital market, pension industry, insurance, leasing, etc.

                                                                  ICAN, ACCA, CPA, ICAEW, are the core professional accountancy certificates (depending on your practising jurisdiction). CFA, CIMA, CIIA, CIBN, CIS,etc. While CITN straddles the equator.

I will advise you surf the net (i.e. Go online to learn more on interviews and ways to get around it). To gain strong feet in finance, get much more expose to things around your business and global environment. Read more of business newspapers, journals, listen to news (political, business and economic – all at local and international levels). Do not continue to be a finance or accountant online by way of reading textbooks, or writing examinations.

                                                                                    This will go a long way in examining your peculiar situation. But, have you ever shown willingness and ability to switch from your current legal function to a finance function, and what steps have you taking so far? Answers to this question will go a long way either.

                                                                                    But, honestly it may seems difficult regardless of the finance qualification someone may have to easily switch from a non-finance function (without any correlation or relationship at all) to a finance function with more than 8 years of legal experience. But, I still believe opportunities can come-up, sometime like taking interest in TAX PRACTICE, a place I see Accounting and Legal Professional to have a little bit handshake. Presently a qualified accountant with ICAN and a legal professional with Law School awards are both granted exemption for Tax Practice by CITN (Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria)
